Thank you for the quick response. Yes, I can see that the spittoons used in
bars, primarily patronized by men, wouldn't be practical if made of
earthenware or porcelain, and those made for women's use would tend to be
more decorative. It seems fairly straightforward when you think about it.
I'm going to take a look for references in the historic literature to
spittoons being marketed to women in particular, such as old catalogues or
other references, so that the idea isn't simply hearsay, so to speak. As
an historical archaeologist, I have to document my research, but find that
collectors and antiques folks are often a wealth of knowledge, especially
for obscure details. I'll send you any information I come along if you'd
