1893 World's Fair Toothpick Holder Adams & Co. 1888 SAXON Ruby-Stain Toothpick Holder. 1893 Columbian Worlds Fair.
ADAMS & CO., Pittsburgh, PA made their Saxon pattern in 1888 in crystal, crystal with ruby-stain, plain or engraved. Ruby staining is a surface treatment in which a solution was applied, heated to 1,000 degrees, permanently adhering it to the glass. Several tableware pieces were made, this was catalogued as "Toothpick". 2 1/8"w x 2 3/8"h., condition excellent.
The 1893 wreath front was silk-screened at the factory in bulk, the reverse was needle-engraved "John Scurr" at the fair for the buyer. A plain ruby-stained toothpick is on P. 52 "1000 Toothpick Holders" by William Heacock. No reproductions.
